Hi guys! Can you introduce yourselves and tell us a bit about Flying The Nest?

Hey, we are Stephen and Jess, a young Australian couple with a passion for travelling, photography and filmmaking. We have been travelling the world together for the past 7 years and just over 6 months ago we created Flying The Nest. We recently left home to travel the world with nothing but a suitcase, passports and a camera. We created Flying The Nest to serve as a visual representation of our experiences, a collection of our work and a platform for endless inspiration.

When did you Fly The Nest?

We flew the nest on the 9th of February, 2015 for a year of full time travel.

What was the reason for started a vlog as well as your written blog?

We started the blog to have a platform where we could keep all our memories of past travels and the ones to come, through writing and photography. We wanted a place we could save all our travel inspiration, to inspire us and others to keep going and see more of the world.

Once we decided we wanted to leave home for a year of travel we knew we wanted to document our time not only on the blog, but in film. We created our YouTube channel and uploaded our first daily vlog we were hooked and have uploaded daily ever since.

So far what has been the most memorable part of your travels?

It would have to be our recent weekend in Whistler. We learnt how to ski and went bungee jumping for the first time – two memories we will never forget.

Tell us a bit about the business side of vlogging. Are you able to generate an income from your videos?

As we have only been uploading videos for just over 2 months we are yet to generate any income from our videos. Our main purpose for our YouTube channel is to document our first year leaving home to travel the world, so money is not a goal for us.

What are your travel plans for 2015?

As mentioned before, on the 9th of February 2015 we packed our bags, left our home in Australia for a year of full time travel. We began in North America and so far we have travelled through Hawaii, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and currently living in Vancouver Canada. We have a lot more planned for the year, but you will just have to wait and see.

What place are you looking forward to the most?

Again we don’t want to give away too much, but we are very excited for a little trip happening outside of North America.

For people just starting do you have any tips for making your videos look better and making them easier to edit?

We recommend getting yourself a camera that has image stabilization and can film in HD, just like our Sony RX100II. It is a very light weight, hand held camera which is very easy to use when travelling and daily vlogging, yet gives amazing quality images.

For editing, iMovie is a great, free way to start but if possible we recommend you invest in Adobe Premier Elements (the basic version of Premiere Pro) and then you will have room to grow as you want to get more technical.

Search your ‘inner geek’ and tell us about the equipment and software you use.

We mainly film our vlogs on our Sony RX 100 II, it is very light and easy to use yet still produces stunning quality. We also like to bring our our Canon 5D Mark III from time to time when we are feeling fancy. We edit our daily vlogs on Premiere Pro CC.

Beaches or mountains

Back in the day our answer would always have been beaches, but after witness the beautiful mountains here in Canada we would have to say mountains.

Favourite film

Our favourite film to do with travel would have to be The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

If you look outside your window, what do you see?

Well spring has sprung here in Canada so we are lucky enough to see a large cherry blossoms in bloom.
